How do I return something to Amazon by mail?

Start the return in your Amazon account under Your Orders: Amazon generates a prepaid shipping label or a QR code for a label-free drop-off, and you rarely need to buy postage yourself. Who pays the return shipping depends on the reason, and items from marketplace sellers follow the seller's own return policy. Be honest up front: LetterAgent's shipping labels are for your own parcels, not Amazon returns.

What are the actual return options Amazon offers?

Amazon steers you toward the cheapest option for its network. For many returns you will see a label-free, box-free drop-off: you get a QR code, walk into a Whole Foods, UPS Store, or Amazon Hub location, and they scan the code and handle the packing. If you would rather mail it yourself, choose the mail option and Amazon generates a prepaid return label you print and attach. In Canada, Amazon's return flow typically offers Purolator, Canada Post, or drop-off points depending on the item. The key detail: do not buy your own postage and mail it to an Amazon warehouse address you find online. Returns must be registered through your account so the warehouse knows to expect your parcel; an unregistered parcel can sit in receiving limbo while your return window expires.

Who pays for the return shipping?

It depends on why you are returning. When the item is defective, damaged, wrong, or not as described, Amazon covers the return shipping and the full refund. When you changed your mind or ordered the wrong size, you usually pay, and Amazon deducts the return shipping cost from your refund automatically. In Canada, some categories carry a flat return fee deducted the same way. There is a gray area worth knowing: selecting the wrong return reason to avoid the fee can backfire, because Amazon inspects returned items and can adjust the refund if the item's condition does not match the stated reason.

How are marketplace-seller returns different?

Items "sold by" a third-party seller and shipped by that seller run under the seller's own return policy, which can be stricter than Amazon's: shorter windows, restocking fees, or a requirement that you ship the item back with your own label and tracking. For these returns, Amazon's self-serve label may not appear at all; the seller sends you the return address and you arrange the shipping. This is the one Amazon-return scenario where buying your own postage is normal, and it is also where the "ship it back" option matters. Even here, the seller usually needs a trackable shipment, so keep the tracking number and send them a photo of the receipt.

What should I know before I drop it off?

Remove or cover any old shipping labels if you are reusing the box, keep the original packaging when you have it (Amazon refunds more smoothly when items arrive in resalable condition), and keep your drop-off receipt until the refund posts. Refunds typically process a few business days after the warehouse receives and scans the parcel, not when you hand it to the carrier. If the return tracking stalls for more than a couple of weeks, contact Amazon support with the return ID from your order page. And one deadline that trips people up: most returns must be initiated within 30 days of delivery, so start the return in your account even if you cannot drop the parcel off the same day.
