The same way you'd address mail to any US state: name, street address, city, the territory's two-letter abbreviation, and its ZIP code. Use PR for Puerto Rico, GU for Guam, VI for the US Virgin Islands, AS for American Samoa, and MP for the Northern Mariana Islands. Standard domestic postage applies; it's not international mail.
| Territory | Abbreviation | ZIP code range |
|---|---|---|
| Puerto Rico | PR | 00601 to 00988 |
| Guam | GU | 96910 to 96932 |
| U.S. Virgin Islands | VI | 00801 to 00851 |
| American Samoa | AS | 96799 (one ZIP for the whole territory) |
| Northern Mariana Islands | MP | 96950 to 96952 |
Address format is identical to the states: name, street address, then city, territory abbreviation, and ZIP on the last line. American Samoa is the quirky one: the entire territory shares a single ZIP code, 96799, which sits in the same 967 prefix range as Hawaii, so the city line does the heavy lifting.
Spanish address lines are normal and expected. You'll see "urbanizacion" (often shortened to URB) for the neighborhood, plus street types like "calle" and "avenida," and some addresses use "HC" (highway contract) box numbers instead of street names. Keep the Spanish as written: don't translate it into English, since the local post office sorts on the Spanish form. Many addresses in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are PO Boxes, since street delivery doesn't reach everywhere, so check which one your recipient actually uses.
Domestic. Standard US postage applies, addressed exactly like mail to any state: it's not international mail. One wrinkle worth knowing applies to parcels, not letters: Priority Mail packages weighing 16 ounces or more sent to the Pacific territories (the 969 ZIP codes and 96799) need a customs declaration form. Ordinary letters need nothing extra.
LetterAgent mails letters to US addresses, which includes the territories: PR, GU, VI, AS, and MP are all served as domestic US destinations.
A related question comes up a lot: mail to service members uses APO (Army and Air Force) or FPO (Navy and Marine Corps) addresses with "state" codes AA, AE, and AP, and it also goes at domestic postage. Don't confuse these with the territories: APO and FPO are military post offices, while PR, GU, VI, AS, and MP are civilian territory addresses with ordinary ZIP codes. Both are domestic mail, but the address format is different, so use the format your recipient gave you.
