Can I stop a letter after I've mailed it?

Almost never. Once a letter enters the mailstream, neither USPS nor Canada Post offers a recall for ordinary letters: USPS Package Intercept works on eligible parcels only, and letters don't qualify. If you dropped it in a collection box minutes ago and it hasn't been collected, you may get it back. Otherwise, send a follow-up correcting it.

Why is there no recall for letters?

USPS Package Intercept, the service people usually have in mind, works because parcels carry tracking barcodes: the post office can flag a specific barcode and pull that parcel at the next scan point, for a fee. Ordinary letters have no barcode tied to you. Once your envelope joins the stream of millions, there's nothing to flag and no practical way to find it.

Canada Post is the same story: no consumer recall service exists for lettermail. The system is built for volume and speed, and stopping one envelope midstream was never part of the design.

What do you do instead?

Send a second letter. A short follow-up that says "please disregard my letter of [date]" and gives the corrected information is the real-world fix, and it's what businesses and lawyers do when a letter goes out with an error. Send it by a faster or tracked method so it has a chance of arriving close behind the first, and reference the first letter clearly so the recipient can match them up.

If the letter contained something sensitive or financially consequential, like a check or an account number, act on that front directly: call your bank about the check, notify anyone whose information was exposed, and don't wait for the mail to sort itself out. If the letter has legal consequences, talk to a lawyer promptly rather than hoping the follow-up is enough.

How do you avoid needing a recall?

Build a pause into your process. Read the letter once more after it's sealed, or sleep on anything written in anger before it goes in the mailbox. For important letters, having someone else read the draft catches the errors you're blind to: wrong names, wrong amounts, wrong addresses. And for letters where timing matters, a tracked service at least tells you where the letter is, even if it can't bring it back.
