Stamps are just one way to pay for postage: not the only way. You can buy postage online and print it, use a postage meter that prints postage onto the envelope, or buy envelopes with postage pre-printed. And if you mail through LetterAgent, postage is already folded into the per-letter quote you approve: stamps never enter the picture.
A postage indicia (in-DISH-ee-uh) is the printed mark a postage meter leaves on an envelope: a small rectangle showing the postage amount, the mailing date, and a code identifying the meter. It replaces the stamp entirely. Businesses use meters because they mail in volume: a meter prints the exact postage for each piece, keeps a running log for accounting, and skips the whole routine of buying, storing, and sticking stamps. There's also a quiet processing perk: metered mail doesn't go through stamp cancellation, because the indicia already carries the mailing date. That's one less handling step between your envelope and the truck.
Both USPS and Canada Post (plus third-party postage sellers) let you buy postage on the web and print it yourself. For a letter, that usually means printing the postage onto the envelope or onto a label you stick on it. Once the postage is on there, the letter goes into any mailbox or collection box like any other mail; nobody at a counter needs to see it. It's the same idea as printing a shipping label for a package, shrunk down to letter size. You need a printer for this route, but you never need to visit anywhere to buy the postage itself.
The post office sells envelopes with postage already printed on them: you write the letter, address the envelope, and mail it. No stamp to buy, no stamp to stick. USPS calls them stamped envelopes; Canada Post sells prepaid envelopes too. They're handy if you mail the same kind of letter repeatedly, like monthly invoices. One reassuring detail: if the postage rate rises after you buy a batch, the envelopes aren't wasted: you just add a small make-up stamp for the difference.
